A very popular houseplant that offers a display of exotic white blooms. The Moth Orchid is naturally found in the tropical regions of Australia and South-eastern Asia. It is thought they were given that name because their blooms resemble moths in flight. In their natural environment these plants are epiphytic meaning they will attach their roots to trees or rocks. Don’t be scared by the exotic look of this plant, with some regular care you will be rewarded with gorgeous blooms!
Light conditions: indirect, bright light (for example not on a windowsill that gets direct sun at any point in the day), Direct sunlight will damage the leaves. Too little light will result in an Orchid that does not flower.
Neediness: Orchids require special care but once you learn their routine, they are easy to maintain. They require a constant level of humidity so regular misting is a must. Avoid misting the flowers directly.
Watering: Will require weekly watering (usually once a week), but it is very important not to overwater as the roots can rot. Only water if the top layer of soil is dry to touch or if the pot it is in feels light. Do not let soil get soggy. Make sure not to water directly onto the leaves.
Ideal location: bathrooms and kitchens
Rate of growth: Once all flowers have fallen you can cut the stem above a visible joint, this can encourage production of another flower stem. They tend to grow just one or two new leaves a year.
Temperature: keep at a normal room temperature, do not let temperature drop below 14c.
Pets: this plant is toxic to cats and dogs. See our range of pet friendly plants if your pet is prone to nibbling.
